They build cup-shaped nests from moist soil mixed with stalks in barns, sheds, on walls close to the ceiling and breed from April to August, often with 2 annual broods.

They live on farms, open buildings in a varied cultural landscape with orchards, grassland and small bodies of water.
They are dependent on loamy soil to build their nests, but this is becoming increasingly rare in terms of availability. Good swallow nests are available from specialist pet shops, which can then simply be mounted in a suitable place.
