To become an animal keeper, you not only need the training, but also a very special kind of soul.
Even though they often do far more than is required, they would give the shirt off their backs for our animals.
They plan their vacations so that they can also take the animals with them, they train them so that their chances of finding a new home increase and they do this for just CHF 65,000 a year.
You should know that the state does not support animal shelters or animal welfare financially.
We survive solely thanks to donations and the fantastic people who have a heart for animals.
We are sincerely grateful for any amount, no matter how small.
And our animals too!
We firmly believe that everyone can make a contribution to animal welfare and we would be delighted if you would like to share your ideas and suggestions with us. If you have a project idea that you would like to present to us, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail. Every idea is welcome and will be carefully considered by our team. However, it is important to note that our capacity to carry out new projects is dependent on available donations. As a non-profit organization that receives no government funding, we rely heavily on your generosity and commitment to continue our work. Our projects and initiatives are funded solely through the kindness and generosity of people like you.
A donation is much more than just a sum of money.
For our dogs, it means having someone to walk and play with them, feed them, stroke them and keep them fit.
With your support, we prepare them for their forever home and give them a loving place.
Even then, or especially then, when they spend the rest of their lives with us.
Some of our cats have been through a lot.
Some have been badly let down by their humans and sometimes even treated heartlessly.
That’s why it takes a lot of patience and skill to rebuild their trust in their humans.
This is exactly what we can do with your help and your donation.
Whether kitten or pensioner: with your support, the velvet paws get exactly the care and love they need.
We run a rescue center for small animals and reptiles.
Because hamsters still end up under the Christmas tree and rabbits in Easter nests, this was urgently needed.
At least we can prevent them from being abandoned without protection.
We do our best to find a new home for the little ones, but we know from experience that they hardly stand a chance.
Your donation will help us to ensure that they never feel this.
We give them a loving, species-appropriate home.
It is estimated that there are currently between 150,000 and 300,000 feral domestic cats in Switzerland.
On average, a feral domestic cat gives birth to 6 kittens twice a year.
In order to curb the “wild” population and thus also the spread of diseases, we organize free castrations.
These are only possible with your donation.
We run a rescue center for European tortoises.
As the number of inquiries is increasing, we are constantly expanding the facility in order to rescue as many tortoises as possible.
Unfortunately, many of them are foundlings that have been heartlessly abandoned by their human families and left to their fate.
However, there are also animal welfare cases that have been confiscated by the veterinary office due to various abuses.
We try to rehome the tortoises – even if most of them spend the rest of their lives with us.
We are therefore dependent on your support.
With your donation, the animals in our care will be fed daily for approx. 7-8 months during the “summer period” and provided with fresh water and bathing water.
The enclosure is cleaned and regularly stocked with new plants – so that it doesn’t get boring.
Of course, the tortoises are cared for and receive veterinary treatment if necessary.
They are prepared and supported for their hibernation by our trained EFZ animal keepers.
Our outdoor enclosure has been optimally designed for keeping tortoises and is regularly optimized.
This is only possible thanks to you and your donation.
Thank you!
We set up the hedgehog station together with Igel-Hilfe.
Thanks to your donation, we save many hedgehogs and hedgehog babies from human-induced dangers every year.
In the last 25 years, the number of hedgehogs has fallen by 40 % – it’s high time to support the little ones!
With the necessary specialist staff, we nurse the hedgehogs back to health in the hedgehog sanctuary and support them for weeks as they are released into the wild.
We are planning educational projects with schools, kindergartens and forest playgroups so that even the youngest animal lovers know how to treat hedgehogs and other wild animals.
At www.igel-hilfe.ch you can find tips and tricks for rescuing hedgehogs, including how to build a hedgehog house.
Here are two initial tips:
Tips for summer
Hedgehogs often don’t find enough water and food when temperatures are high and it’s dry.
You can help them by placing a water bowl in the garden.
This gives hedgehogs (and other animals) the opportunity to drink water.
Dead hedgehogs found
If all help comes too late and you have found a dead hedgehog, you can usually hand it in at the carcass collection point of the municipality (town).
In many municipalities, this point is located at the works yard.
Attention: Dead hedgehogs or animals do not belong in the garbage or green waste bins.
The worst things in life usually happen without warning.
We can’t always help people, but we can take care of their loved ones.
We support people who are living on the breadline after an ordeal, who have to go to hospital or who have been hit by other strokes of fate.
We take in the pets or support them with food donations.
Although Switzerland is considered one of the richest countries, over 8% of people live on the breadline.
If you would like to help us to support them and their pets, we would be very grateful!
The best way to do this is with a cash donation, as we get big discounts from our suppliers and can buy even bigger food donations for the amount.
When the pension is barely enough to live on and suddenly the washing machine breaks down or the doctor’s bill flutters into the house, things get tight.
To ensure that the pets don’t have to suffer, we help out with food donations or by paying vet bills, among other things.
Provided that the tax documents are checked accordingly.
The example shows how important this support is:
According to Pro Senectute, one in eight older people in Switzerland is directly affected by poverty.
More than 75% of older people live at home and are dependent on supplementary benefits to get by.
A full 20% have to get by on CHF 2550 and use it to pay rent, running costs and all bills.
Many of those affected withdraw.
Their only consolation: their pet.
The company of animals and the task of caring for them gives people much more than they can imagine.
Especially single, elderly people.
Studies show that they even have a positive effect on health.
After all, they provide exercise, variety and something to talk about.
They even often have a healing effect on depression.
If you are in a difficult situation yourself, let us help you. We can talk about covering the costs of treatment at the vet, donating food and much more. Send the necessary documents for verification with the following note Help65+ to info@tierschutznordwestschweiz.ch
